Description
A sticky, sweet-and-salty chicken dish that cooks itself in a slow cooker, perfect for a no-fuss weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 1.5–2 lb total)
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
- 1/2 cup soy sauce (preferably low-sodium)
- 4 cloves garlic, minced (or 1.5 teaspoons garlic paste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Water (optional, for thinning the sauce)
Instructions
- Place the chicken breasts in a single layer in the slow cooker.
- Whisk together the brown sugar, soy sauce, minced garlic, and black pepper until mostly dissolved.
- Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken, adding water if the sauce is too thick.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours.
- Check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the breast.
- Remove the chicken and serve with rice or steamed vegetables, spooning sauce over the top.
- For a glossy finish, simmer the sauce until reduced to a glaze before serving.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, swap soy sauce for tamari or coconut aminos. You can also sear the chicken beforehand for added flavor.
