Description

A delightful dish perfect for brunch or special occasions, combining the classic flavors of French toast in an easy-to-make casserole form.

Ingredients

  • 12 slices of bread (preferably day-old or slightly stale)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (whole or substitute)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish
  • Powdered sugar (optional topping)
  • Maple syrup (optional topping)
  • Fresh fruit (optional topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cube the bread into bite-sized pieces and spread them evenly in the greased baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring every piece is soaked.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and let it sit for at least 30 minutes at room temperature, or refrigerate overnight for deeper flavor.
  6. Bake in your preheated oven for 40 minutes, removing the foil for the last 10 minutes.
  7. Serve warm with optional toppings like powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh fruit.

Notes

Using stale bread improves absorption of the egg mixture. Allowing it to rest enhances flavor infusion.
