Description
A delightful dish perfect for brunch or special occasions, combining the classic flavors of French toast in an easy-to-make casserole form.
Ingredients
- 12 slices of bread (preferably day-old or slightly stale)
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups milk (whole or substitute)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Butter for greasing the baking dish
- Powdered sugar (optional topping)
- Maple syrup (optional topping)
- Fresh fruit (optional topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
- Cube the bread into bite-sized pieces and spread them evenly in the greased baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring every piece is soaked.
- Cover the dish with foil and let it sit for at least 30 minutes at room temperature, or refrigerate overnight for deeper flavor.
- Bake in your preheated oven for 40 minutes, removing the foil for the last 10 minutes.
- Serve warm with optional toppings like powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh fruit.
Notes
Using stale bread improves absorption of the egg mixture. Allowing it to rest enhances flavor infusion.
