Description

Slow-cooked meatballs infused with rich French onion flavor, topped with melted Gruyère cheese for a comforting dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or panko)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 cup French onion soup (canned or boxed)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the ground beef and pork in a large bowl.
  2. Add breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, parsley, salt, and pepper; mix gently.
  3. Shape the mixture into uniform 1-inch meatballs.
  4. Place the meatballs in a single layer in the crockpot.
  5. Pour the French onion soup over the meatballs until well coated.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
  7. If desired, sprinkle shredded Gruyère over the meatballs in the last 15 minutes of cooking.
  8. Serve hot with crusty bread or over mashed potatoes.

Notes

For gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs. Ground turkey or chicken can replace beef/pork but will be leaner; add moisture if needed. For a thicker sauce, consider using cornstarch.
