Ingredients
- 1 loaf of challah or brioche bread
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for the streusel)
Instructions
- Begin by cutting the challah or brioche bread into cubes and placing them into a greased baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Pour this egg mixture over the bread cubes, gently pressing them down to soak thoroughly.
- In another bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and ground cinnamon until crumbly.
- Spread this streusel topping evenly over the bread mixture.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 120 minutes or preferably overnight.
- When you’re ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Place the casserole in the oven and bake for about 60 minutes or until it’s golden brown and set in the center.
- Allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider using day-old bread and feel free to incorporate chocolate chips or nuts into the mixture.
