Description
A quick and easy version of the cult favorite Animal Style fries featuring crispy fries topped with melty cheese, caramelized onions, and a creamy tangy sauce.
Ingredients
- Frozen French fries (any cut; crinkle, shoestring, or steak fries)
- 1–1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 large yellow or sweet onion, thinly sliced
- 1–2 tablespoons neutral oil or butter
- Pinch of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1–2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
Instructions
- Preheat oven: follow the frozen fries package (usually 425°F / 220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment or lightly oil it.
- Bake fries: follow the package timing and turn once if recommended. For extra crunch, roast 5–8 minutes longer.
- Caramelize onions: heat a skillet over medium with oil or butter. Add onions, a pinch of salt, and sugar. Cook until soft and golden — about 12–18 minutes.
- Make the sauce: in a bowl whisk mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, and mustard. Adjust to taste.
- Assemble and melt cheese: transfer fries to a platter, scatter cheese over, and broil if necessary to melt.
- Finish: spoon onions and drizzle sauce over the fries. Serve immediately.
Notes
Best served hot and straight from the oven for optimal texture. Leftovers can be stored but will lose crispness.
