Description

A quick and easy version of the cult favorite Animal Style fries featuring crispy fries topped with melty cheese, caramelized onions, and a creamy tangy sauce.

Ingredients

  • Frozen French fries (any cut; crinkle, shoestring, or steak fries)
  • 1 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 large yellow or sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 12 tablespoons neutral oil or butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 12 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: follow the frozen fries package (usually 425°F / 220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment or lightly oil it.
  2. Bake fries: follow the package timing and turn once if recommended. For extra crunch, roast 5–8 minutes longer.
  3. Caramelize onions: heat a skillet over medium with oil or butter. Add onions, a pinch of salt, and sugar. Cook until soft and golden — about 12–18 minutes.
  4. Make the sauce: in a bowl whisk mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, and mustard. Adjust to taste.
  5. Assemble and melt cheese: transfer fries to a platter, scatter cheese over, and broil if necessary to melt.
  6. Finish: spoon onions and drizzle sauce over the fries. Serve immediately.

Notes

Best served hot and straight from the oven for optimal texture. Leftovers can be stored but will lose crispness.
