Description

Warm, soft sandwich loaves made from pantry staples with a quick preparation time using rapid-rise yeast.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups very warm water (about 105–115°F)
  • 1 packet rapid-rise yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 3/45 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, stir together the very warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the vegetable oil, 2 1/4 cups of flour, and salt. Mix until the mixture comes together.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour until the dough pulls cleanly from the bowl but feels slightly tacky.
  4. Knead for 4–5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover and let rise for about 20 minutes or until it nearly doubles.
  6. Deflate the dough, divide it in half, and shape into loaves. Place in greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding.
  8. Cool in pans for 5–10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and slice when cool.

Notes

Perfect for sandwiches, breakfasts, or as a base for savory dishes. Can replace part of the flour with whole wheat for added flavor.
