Description

A quick and easy homemade bread that comes together in under 20 minutes without yeast, making it perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (about 250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • Optional mix-ins: 1–2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs, 1/2–1 cup grated cheese, or 1–2 cloves minced roasted garlic

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until evenly combined.
  3. Pour in the milk and vegetable oil. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until a shaggy dough forms; don’t overmix. If adding herbs or cheese, fold them in now.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for about 1 minute until the dough is smooth and cohesive.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf about 1.5–2 inches thick and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet. Optionally score the top with a shallow X or decorative lines.
  6. Bake for 15–20 minutes, rotating halfway if your oven is uneven. The loaf is done when it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  7. Let the bread cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For dairy-free, swap milk for unsweetened almond milk or oat milk. For a softer crust, brush with melted butter after baking.
